Extending Safari
Since getting my mac, I have been mainly using Safari as my web browser.
The first main point that annoyed me, was it’s lack of advert blocking. Not popup-blocking—that works perfectly. I mean intrusive banner images. Under windows I had been using the excellent adblock for Firefox, and while this is available for the mac (and installed on mine) Safari has a clean design, and works fast.
So some quick googling later and I found what I was looking for, Pith Helmet. A strange name I know, but it works well. I haven’t changed it from the default set of rules, as I find they work well. A few banners are shown, but I can live with that. It is the 900px high “skyscraper” flash adverts that really annoy me, and I want to block. Thankfully I haven’t seen them about recently (are they still used :P)
Mouse gestures were another necessary addition, but I knew beforehand this was available. BitArt’s Cocoa Gestures were also installed, and a few quick configurations and I was browsing like before.
Except for searching… something that Tiger™ is good at otherwise.
So another extension was found that adds another 2 features not (yet) in Safari. Multiple search engines in the search box (note to IE users, get a decent browser) and type-ahead-find – which is one of these features you don’t think you need untill you use it. This was another simple install from pozytron.com: AcidSearch.
More to follow, no doubt.
