Thanks to the new ‘Front Row Enabled’ version 2.3 of Elgato Systems’ eyeTV Software, and Andrew Escobar’s excellent Front Row Hack, I can now enjoy the benefits of Apple’s Front Row software from across the room. Even though I don’t have an Apple remote. I do however have a perfectly good IR remote and receiver plugged in the form of the eyeTV hardware, and this now controls Front Row just fine.

The one quirk is that you have to go through the eyeTV ‘Front Row-esq’ screen, and select the ‘Front Row’ option to launch the Apple version, which doesn’t recognise the fact I have a PVR on my mac. So they are not fully integrated, yet. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if someone does release a hack to change this…

The controls for navigating the menus take a bit of getting used to too, although I’m sure that is an Apple design ‘feature’. Using the OK button to go up an menu and cancel to go back is less intuitive than using the right arrow to go up a menu (the presence of a submenu is indicated by the > character, which reinforces this incorrect thinking). I presume this is so that it is easier to support RTL languages as well as LTR, although I am not sure.
