Helmeted cyclists in more peril on the road
The Times Online reports that… “Cyclists who wear helmets are more likely to be knocked off their bicycles than those who do not”
Research by Ian Walker, a traffic psychologist, indicates that drivers give a wider margin to those cyclists they perceive to be less-able—those without helmets, or lycra. Whether this holds true across the country is not clear, as I think the research was only carried out in/around Bath. The extra margin was just 10cm on average, which is not that much. When driving I try to leave at least 1m and often a lot more, but that is perhaps just because I am a cyclist myself. And I’m not going be giving up my helmet any time soon.
