The news of this morning was that Saddam Hussein has been executed for crimes against humanity. While I am in no way sad to hear this news, instead I feel for the many people who were affected by his brutal rule that have not had full justice. He was tried for just one crime…

On November 5, 2006, Saddam Hussein was found guilty of crimes against humanity in ordering the deaths of 148 Shi’ite villagers in the town of Dujail in 1982 and sentenced to death by hanging. (Wikipedia)

While I accept that perhaps there is no worse punishment than death, he has not been punished for all of the other crimes he committed. The families of those affected by the multitude of other crimes will never receive (the albeit small) consolation and sense of closure from the perpetrator of those crimes being formally charged and tried.

But none of this will end the current violence in Iraq. One wonders when the leaders of the invasion will be brought to trial for their crimes against humanity!
