I went with a few friends to see Glasgow band Mogwai at the Ironworks on Friday night, and the tinnitus in my ears has only just subsided.

Mogwai - iv

To say they were loud is a bit of an understatement. It wasn’t just the volume, although that was high, it was the depth of the sound. As Michael commented afterwards—and I had been thinking during the gig—it was a literal “wall of sound”.

There were contrasting quiet songs and sections in the music, which just acted to make the loud bits sound louder, as they gradually but continually ramped up the volume past 11 to 14.

The support act, Adien Moffat (Arab Strap), was very different, but a good complement to Mogwai. Where they have no discernible lyrics, Moffat had only minor instrumentals to back up his spoken word.

But I think what sums the gig up for me was chatting too a friend in Brighton the next morning, who was surprised that anyone played Inverness :/
